The club and its Celta360 project have reached a new milestone on the path toward a more sustainable sports model committed to its environment. The Afouteza Sports City and the Celta360 project, declared of regional interest, have been recognized with the prestigious BREEAM certification under BREEAM Urbanism, making Celta the first club in the world to receive this distinction.

The BREEAM certification (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method), of British origin and internationally recognized, is one of the most advanced and demanding sustainability assessment systems in construction; therefore, obtaining it positions Celta as a benchmark not only in the sports field but also in environmental, economic, and social commitment. Being part of the exclusive group of buildings and facilities that hold this certification, such as Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 2 or various Olympic and World Cup venues, highlights the ambition and level of the Celta360 project.

Marián Mouriño, who attended the award ceremony, stated that the certification “is another mark of identity, another sign that things are being done well. Celta360 will continue to grow, doing so while complying with all sustainability standards, respecting the environment and the neighbors of Mos.”

Carlos Cao, the club’s Director of Infrastructure and Institutional Relations, also emphasized that this certification “recognizes the effort made by the team since the beginning of the project with a clear objective, which was, and still is, to respect the environment and our roots.” Cao explained that “BREEAM assesses aspects such as land use, energy efficiency, social well-being, and mobility,” but he stressed that for obtaining this certification, “the project’s integration into the territory and its positive impact on the community were especially important.” He also pointed out that “sustainability is a priority in the club’s strategy” and that, looking to the future, “Celta aims to apply this same approach to other facilities such as A Madroa, Abanca Balaídos, or A Sede.”

Meanwhile, Carlos Calvo, Managing Director of ITG, commented that this “is recognition of the club’s effort to adopt the world’s most important sustainability standards in its facilities. It’s a clear demonstration that Celta is committed to sustainable integration into its surroundings, which allows the club to reach a significant level of differentiation.”

Finally, María Paz, Head of BREEAM Urbanism in Spain, and responsible for verifying that the club meets the necessary requirements, confirmed that the certification follows a “holistic approach, covering aspects such as water management, energy management, community participation…” and that “Celta goes beyond what is required by regulation, making the club’s efforts truly admirable.”

With this achievement, Celta, in collaboration with CBRE, consolidates its role as a pioneer in the sector and continues its process of building facilities that will stand as examples of sports excellence, innovation, efficiency, and environmental commitment.
