In recent weeks, Vigo has become a meeting point for Japanese football talent. A total of 34 young footballers participating in the A Canteira Experience programme from Japan have come together at Celta’s facilities, taking part in both short- and long-term stays. This figure highlights the club’s ability to attract young international talent and establish the Celta360 ecosystem as a leading destination for football development.
This is no one-off occurrence. Around 200 Japanese footballers will visit Vigo over the course of this season, and over the past nine seasons, Celta has already made an impact on more than 500 players from Japan. The club also maintains a presence in the Asian country: every year, Celta coaches travel to the Land of the Rising Sun to deliver training clinics, bringing the club’s methodology to Japan.

This experience is made possible through the collaboration agreement between Celta and Wakatake Group, which allows young Japanese players to become part of the club’s day-to-day activities through A Canteira Experience, Celta360’s programme. This initiative goes beyond training, offering participants the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into Celta’s working methodology, improve their skills and develop in a training environment that combines high standards, education and personal growth. The relationship with Japan has continued to grow since Celta and Wakatake Group began their collaboration in the 2017-2018 season.
The aim is for every participant to experience life as a Celta academy player. And this is no ordinary academy: Celta is the third club among Europe’s five major leagues to give the most playing time to its academy graduates, while its reserve team, Celta Fortuna, achieved a historic promotion to the Second Division last season. Japanese youngsters therefore have the opportunity to develop at one of the best academies in the world, following a methodology recognised for its player development.

The presence of such a large number of footballers year after year highlights the international reach of a project that brings together two footballing cultures united by the same passion for the sport. For young Japanese players, training in Vigo means experiencing an approach to football based on talent development and continuous learning. For Celta, it represents an opportunity to share its identity and methodology with new generations of footballers from all over the world.
Looking ahead, Celta360 is working to attract even more Japanese players to Vigo, with the aim of establishing the city as Europe’s leading destination for Japanese football development. Through A Canteira Experience, Celta continues to expand the reach of A Canteira and strengthen its facilities as an international training destination. The presence of these young Japanese players demonstrates Celta360’s potential to take the club’s model beyond Galicia and make Vigo a place where footballers from different countries can learn, grow and experience Celta from the inside.
